Choosing a 1200mm Vanity: Which Layout Suits Your Bathroom?
At 1200mm you make two decisions: one basin with a long bench or two basins side by side, and a wall hung cabinet or one that stands on the floor. Most cabinets in this range are 1190โ1200mm wide and 450โ500mm deep, so check those two numbers against your wall first. The table matches each layout to the bathroom it suits.
| Layout | Best for | Trade-off | Models to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single basin, wall hung | Main bathrooms where one person uses the basin at a time | Drawers work around one waste | Hera, Brooklyn, Fremantle |
| Double basin, wall hung | Couples who get ready at the same time | Little bench space between the bowls | Eden, Chester, Ridgewood |
| Single basin, freestanding | Plumbing that comes up through the floor | Base covers the floor beneath | Polar, Camden, Scandinavia |
| Double basin, freestanding | Family bathrooms that want two basins and floor-to-bench storage | Compact bench and a covered floor | Brighton, Harrington, Hera four-drawer |
Where a 1200mm Vanity Fits
A 1200mm vanity suits a family bathroom or a main ensuite, where it gives real bench space and enough storage for two people. It is usually too wide for a powder room or a small ensuite, where a 900mm vanity or one of our ensuite and slimline vanities leaves more room to move.
Before you choose a model, check four things in the room:
- Wall width. Measure between the fixed points either side, such as a wall, a shower screen or a window frame. A cabinet listed at 1190mm gives a little play in a 1200mm gap.
- Floor space in front. Drawers need room to open fully. Check that an open drawer will clear the toilet, the door swing and the shower door.
- Waste and water points. Note whether the waste comes out of the wall or up through the floor. This decides whether a wall hung or freestanding cabinet suits you best.
- Bench height. Decide how high you want the basin before you set the brackets for a wall hung cabinet.
Single or Double Basin in a 1200mm Vanity?
1200mm is the smallest width where two basins work properly, and about a third of this range is double bowl. Two basins solve the morning queue, but they leave only a compact bench between the bowls. A single basin keeps the bench long: on a model like Ravello, it leaves roughly 800mm of clear benchtop.
A double basin also doubles the plumbing. You need two pop-up wastes and two mixers, and the cabinet must leave room for two traps. Our double bowl cabinets are built for this; Camden, for example, has a U-shaped recess through the drawers for both sets of pipework. If you want two basins and more bench, step up to a 1500mm vanity. To see a popular double layout, start with the Eden 1200mm double bowl vanity.
A single basin does not have to sit in the centre. The Noah freestanding legs vanity, for example, comes in left-hand and right-hand drawer versions, so you can choose which side the drawers sit on. An offset basin suits a room where the waste point is not centred on the wall.
Wall Hung or Freestanding at 1200mm?
About two thirds of our 1200mm vanities are wall hung. A floating cabinet leaves the floor visible, which makes the room read larger and lets you mop underneath. The wall behind it needs solid support, such as studs or noggings, where the brackets fix. Plan this before the wall is sheeted. The wall hung cabinets in the size table below are 400โ580mm tall, so you set the bench height when you choose the mounting height. As a guide, our freestanding Polar and Brighton cabinets stand 860โ880mm tall, which shows the bench height a floor-standing unit gives you. Browse all wall hung vanities.
A freestanding vanity stands on legs or a kickboard and hides plumbing that comes up through the floor. If your waste comes through the floor and you want a wall hung cabinet, the pipework usually has to move into the wall, which is plumbing work to plan and budget for. A freestanding cabinet also runs close to the floor, so it holds more storage. Browse all freestanding vanities.
Drawers or Doors: Storage Layouts at 1200mm
Most 1200mm cabinets in this range use one of three storage layouts:
- All drawers. Fremantle and the Rome Curve all-drawer vanities use drawers across the full front. You see everything at a glance when a drawer is open.
- Doors and drawers. Chester has two drawers between two arched doors, and Camden has a cupboard at each end with drawers in the middle. Cupboards take tall bottles and cleaning products that do not fit a drawer.
- Working curved ends. On Estella and Ravello, the rounded ends are pull-out drawers rather than decorative panels, so the curve adds storage.
Brooklyn comes in both versions, all drawers or a door with drawers, so you can choose the storage without changing the look. See more layouts in our drawer vanities.
Measuring Up: Width, Depth and Height
Several cabinets measure 1190mm rather than 1200mm, which leaves a little play in a 1200mm recess. In the models below, depth runs from 450mm on flat-front cabinets to 500mm on curved ones. If your walkway is tight, compare our ensuite and slimline vanities instead. These listed sizes come from the product pages:
| Model | W ร D ร H (mm) | Mounting | Cabinet material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hera | 1200 ร 450 ร 560 | Wall hung | Moisture-resistant MDF |
| Chester | 1190 ร 455 ร 470 | Wall hung | PVC |
| Riva | 1200 ร 465 ร 580 | Wall hung | PVC |
| Estella | 1190 ร 495 ร 400 | Wall hung | PVC |
| Ravello | 1190 ร 495 ร 470 | Wall hung | Plywood |
| Artis | 1200 ร 500 ร 550 | Wall hung | PVC |
| Brighton | 1190 ร 455 ร 860 | Freestanding | PVC |
| Polar | 1200 ร 465 ร 880 | Freestanding | PVC |
Cabinet Materials and Finishes
The cabinet board matters more than the colour in a wet room. About half of this range is PVC, which will not swell if water sits on it; see all waterproof vanities. Plywood models such as Ridgewood, Gladstone and Ravello use cross-laminated timber layers that resist humidity. If you choose an MDF model, check the warranty terms, because some exclude water damage. Warranty terms are listed on each product page.
For looks, the range covers timber-look vanities in oak and walnut, fluted vanities, curved vanities and Hampton vanities with shaker panels, in matte white, black, grey and olive green.
Handles are part of the finish. Hera, Fremantle, Brooklyn and Polar use finger pulls, so the front stays flat. Eden and Rome Curve let you pick the handle colour, from matte black and matte white to brushed nickel, brushed gold and gunmetal, so you can match your tapware.
Tops, Basins and Taps
Many 1200mm cabinets are sold cabinet only, with a ceramic, solid surface or stone top added as an option. Stone tops are cut to your basin and tap position, usually take 3โ5 days, and cannot be refunded once cut. Pop-up wastes and mixers are sold separately unless the listing says otherwise, so add pop-up wastes and basin mixers to your order: two of each for a double basin. Check the waste size on each listing.
Choose your tapware before you order the top, because the tap hole is set when the top is made. A bench-mounted mixer needs a tap hole in the top. On Noah models you can choose a Noah top with one or three tap holes, or a Monaco top with none. On cut stone tops such as Artis, the tap hole can sit at the 12, 10 or 2 o'clock position. A wall-mounted mixer needs no tap hole, but the plumbing has to go into the wall before tiling. If your stone top suits a separate basin, browse our above counter basins.
Finishing the Wall and Installation
A 1200mm shaving cabinet lines up with the vanity edge to edge, and Hera, Riva and Polar come in matching 1200mm cabinets. Some cabinets, such as Estella and Ravello, arrive fully assembled; check each listing for assembly details. In Sydney, we can fit your vanity with our vanity installation service.
