Rail sets, shower heads and hand showers

Hand held Showers

A hand held shower lets you aim the water where you need it, so rinsing children, pets or the shower walls is easier. We stock Cora and Tube hand showers, plus Eden Square and IKON Clasico Hampton models supplied on a wall outlet bracket with a 1.5m stainless steel hose. Spray options run from one to three functions. Finishes include chrome, matte black, brushed gold, brushed nickel and gun metal, with Cora also in brushed copper. For a head that slides up and down, see our rail showers. To run a hand shower and an overhead rain shower head from one control, see our shower mixers with diverter, or browse all shower heads and rails.

Hand Held Shower, Rail Shower or Twin Shower Rail?

A hand held shower suits a bathroom that already has a wall outlet where you want the handset. Every model here comes with its hose and a holder that is also the water outlet, so the wall needs one connection. Choose a rail shower or a twin shower rail for height adjustment or an overhead head.

A hand held shower is the simplest of the three to plan, because nothing slides on a rail. The trade-off is a fixed handset height: the holder stays where the outlet is. Fitting the holder to an existing outlet is simple. Adding a new outlet is plumbing work, so a licensed plumber should do it.

Which Hand Held Shower Fits Your Bathroom?

  • If you want a handset on an outlet you already have, choose a hand held shower from this page.
  • If people of different heights share the shower, choose a rail shower so the handset slides.
  • If you want an overhead head and a hand shower on one rail, choose a twin shower rail.
  • If you want the lowest water use, choose Cora, rated 5 stars at 5.5 L/min.
  • If you prefer a square handset, choose Eden Square.
  • If your mixer is from the IKON Clasico range, choose the Clasico Hampton hand shower.

Hand Held Shower Spray Functions and WELS Flow Rates

A hand held shower's WELS rating shows how much water it uses each minute, and more stars means less water. In this range, Cora uses the least at 5.5 L/min and Tube the most at 8.5 L/min. Spray settings run from a single spray on Clasico Hampton to three functions on Cora and Eden Square.

Running a Hand Held Shower With an Overhead Shower Head

A hand held shower and an overhead shower head can share one control when the wall has a diverter mixer. The diverter sends water to one outlet or the other, so you plan two outlets on the wall: one for the overhead arm and one for the hand shower holder. Your plumber sets both during the rough-in.

A hand held shower in this setup works as the second outlet. Pick the overhead from our shower heads, fit it on one of our shower arms, and run both from a shower mixer with diverter. If you would rather keep both heads on one rail, compare twin shower rails instead.

Using a Hand Held Shower at the Bath

A hand held shower works at a back-to-wall bath when there is a wall outlet within reach of the tub. It makes rinsing hair and cleaning the bath easier than a fixed spout. A freestanding bath away from the wall is different: there, a floor-mounted mixer with its own hand shower is usually the better fit.

Some of our freestanding bath mixers include a hand shower, so check the product title. For a bath against the wall, pair the hand held shower with a bath wall mixer from our wall mixers in the same finish.

Matching Hand Held Shower Finishes and Ranges

A hand held shower looks best in the same finish and range as the mixer beside it. Special finishes such as brushed gold and gun metal can differ between brands, so matching within one range is the safer choice. Clasico Hampton has a turned handpiece made to sit with the IKON Clasico range.

Hand held Showers FAQs

Can you add a hand held shower to an existing shower?

Yes, if there is a spare wall outlet where you want the handset. Every hand held shower in this range comes with its hose and a holder, and the holder doubles as the water outlet, so it fits onto that one connection. If your shower has only the overhead outlet, you need a second outlet and a way to switch between them, such as a shower mixer with diverter. Adding a new outlet is plumbing work, so a licensed plumber should do it.

Can you use a hand held shower with a bathtub?

Yes. At a back-to-wall bath, fit a hand held shower to a wall outlet within reach of the tub and use it to rinse hair or clean the bath. At a freestanding bath away from the wall, a floor-mounted mixer with its own hand shower is usually the better fit. Some of our freestanding bath mixers include one, so check the product title. Whichever you choose, match the finish to the spout or mixer beside it so the bath area reads as one set.

Do you need a plumber to install a hand held shower?

Fitting a hand held shower to an existing wall outlet is simple: the holder mounts onto the outlet and the hose connects the handset. Adding a new outlet, moving one, or adding a diverter is plumbing work, so a licensed plumber should do it. Before you order, check that the outlet sits at a height you will use, because the holder stays where the outlet is. If you want the handset height to change, look at rail showers instead, where the handset slides up and down.

What is the difference between a hand shower and a rail shower?

A hand shower sits in a fixed holder on the wall outlet, so the handset always rests at one height. A rail shower puts the handset on a vertical rail with a slider, so each person can set their own height. Rail showers suit bathrooms shared by people of different heights. Hand showers suit a second spray point, a bath, or a wall where a rail will not fit. If you also want an overhead head, compare twin shower rails, which carry both on one rail.

How do I choose a hand held shower head?

Start with where it will go, because you need a wall outlet at a height that suits you. Then pick the spray: one function for a simple rinse, or three if you want to switch patterns. Check the WELS rating as well. In this range, Cora is 5 star at 5.5 L/min and Tube is 3 star at 8.5 L/min. Finally, match the finish and range to your mixer, such as IKON Clasico for the Clasico Hampton handset. Prices vary by finish, so compare the current prices on this page.
