Granite kitchen sink FAQs
Is a granite sink a good idea?
For most kitchens and laundries, yes. Our granite sinks are made from granite quartz, which is heat resistant up to 280°C, food grade and lead free, so a hot pot or tray will not mark the surface the way it can on acrylic. The matte finish hides small scratches and feels warmer and quieter than steel when you wash up. The main care point is staining: rinse coffee, tea and beetroot away rather than leaving them to sit, especially in a white sink. Most models also install top mount or undermount.
What are the downsides of a granite sink?
There are three to weigh up. First, a pale granite sink can show stains from strong colours if they sit for hours, so a quick rinse after use matters. Second, hard water can leave chalky marks on a dark sink; a wipe with a soft cloth and some vinegar removes them. Third, granite sinks are heavier than stainless steel, so the cabinet and benchtop cut-out must support the weight. None of these is a deal breaker, but if you want the lowest maintenance, compare our stainless steel sinks.
Granite or stainless steel: which kitchen sink is better?
Choose granite if you want a matte, colour-matched look, a quieter sink and good resistance to heat and scratches. Choose stainless steel if you want the widest range of sizes, the lightest weight and the easiest stain-free care. Steel can show water spots and fine scratches, while granite can show stains if left uncleaned. Style matters too: black granite suits modern and industrial kitchens, white granite suits Hamptons and coastal looks. You can compare both materials side by side in our full kitchen sinks range.
Can I undermount a granite sink?
Most of our granite sinks can be installed either top mount or undermount, including the compact square and round laundry bowls and the 813mm single and double bowl kitchen models. Undermounting suits stone benchtops, because you can wipe crumbs straight into the bowl. The Cora granite sinks with a drainer are designed as above-mount sinks, and their tap holes are semi-drilled on both sides so you can set the bowl on the left or right. Check the installation details on each product page and confirm the cut-out with your stonemason before ordering.
What size granite sink do I need?
Start with the inside width of your cabinet and the job the sink will do. For a laundry, butler's pantry or bar area, a compact bowl around 380mm to 470mm is usually enough, and we stock both square and round shapes. For a main kitchen sink, a single bowl around 730mm to 813mm suits most families, while a double bowl helps if you hand wash often. For long benches, a Cora sink with a drainer gives you a built-in draining area. Warranty periods differ by model and are listed on each product page.
