400mm to 1800mm

Freestanding Vanities

Freestanding vanities sit directly on the floor, on legs or a kickboard, so they suit bathrooms where the wall cannot carry a hung unit or where you want to keep existing plumbing out of sight. This range runs from 400mm to 1800mm, including 360mm slimline units and narrow units from 220mm deep, with single or double bowl in the larger sizes. Finishes include PVC waterproof gloss white, matte white and matte black, Hampton shaker, fluted and timber-look oak and walnut; the top, ceramic or stone, is listed on each product. Shop by width through our 900mm vanities, 1200mm vanities and 1500mm vanities. For a warmer look, browse timber vanities, or compare wall hung vanities.

Freestanding Vanity, Floor Standing Vanity or Vanity Unit: What to Check First

Freestanding vanity, floor standing vanity and floor mounted vanity all name the same cabinet: one that stands on the floor rather than hanging on the wall. Before you compare finishes, check where the waste pipe comes out, whether the floor is level, and how much depth you have in front of the wall.

  • Waste pipe: a kickboard base can hide a waste that comes up through the floor, while legs leave it on show.
  • Floor level: if the floor is out of level, a range with adjustable legs lets you level the cabinet before the top goes on.
  • Depth: measure from the wall to the nearest door swing, toilet or shower screen, then use the depth table below.
  • Fixing: a freestanding vanity carries its own weight, but we recommend fixing it to the wall to stop it tipping, especially a model on legs.

If your waste already comes out of the wall and you want open floor under the cabinet, our wall hung vanities page compares the two types by plumbing.

Freestanding Vanities on Legs or a Kickboard

A freestanding vanity on legs leaves the floor open, so it looks lighter and you can mop underneath. A kickboard closes the base to the floor, hides a floor waste and keeps dust and splashes out from under the cabinet. Ranges on this page ship in four different ways, so decide the base before you order.

Hera and Rita stand on adjustable legs as standard, which helps on a floor that is not quite level. Noah shows the difference at 1200mm: the Noah 1200mm six drawer vanity on legs and the same cabinet with a kickboard are separate products, so pick the one that suits your floor waste.

Freestanding Vanity Depths and Widths

Freestanding vanities on this page fall into three depth groups in the models we checked: 220 to 260mm, 340 to 365mm, and 445 to 495mm. Depth decides whether the cabinet clears the door and the shower, so measure it as carefully as width.

By width, nearly half of this range is 600 to 900mm, and about a fifth each is 1200mm or 1500mm. Double bowls start at 1200mm and are most common at 1500mm, where each basin gets its own bench space. The largest models, including double bowls, are on the 1800mm vanities page.

Which Freestanding Vanity Fits Your Bathroom?

  • If the room is a powder room or a tight ensuite, choose a 220mm deep model such as the Hera 400mm in Elegant Oak.
  • If the waste comes up through the floor and you want it hidden, choose a kickboard base, or a range that offers one as an add-on.
  • If the floor is uneven, choose a range with adjustable legs, such as Hera or Rita.
  • If two people use the basin at the same time, choose a double bowl from the 1500mm vanities.
  • If the vanity sits next to the shower and gets splashed every day, choose a PVC cabinet from our waterproof vanities.

Freestanding Vanity Materials and Styles

About two in five freestanding vanities here have PVC cabinets, which do not swell when wet. About a third are MDF, and about one in ten is water-resistant plywood. Choose the board for how wet the room gets, then choose the front style.

  • PVC: Polar, Acacia, Harrington, Stella, Brighton, Harold and the gloss white Scandinavia models.
  • Moisture-resistant MDF: Hera, Rita and Bella. It handles splashes, but water left sitting on it can make it swell, so wipe up spills.
  • MDF with a finish on top: Noah and Semi-Recessed have a high gloss polyurethane finish, and Camden is wrapped in woodgrain PVC film.
  • Water-resistant plywood: the Scandinavia timber models in Classic Oak and Walnut, and Aulic Varcelli.
  • Stainless steel: Midnight Marble, with legs and a black marble look.

For other ranges, the cabinet material is listed on each product page. For the front style, about a quarter of this range has Hampton shaker doors and about one in eight has fluted fronts. About a third comes in an oak look; compare them on our oak vanities page, or see black vanities for matte black. Clean any finish with a soft damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Warranty terms are listed on each product page.

Tops, Basins and Tap Holes for Freestanding Vanities

Many freestanding vanities on this page are sold cabinet only, so you choose the top as a separate option. Others, such as the Stella and Hera 400mm models, come with an integrated ceramic basin. Check the tap hole on the top before you pay, because it decides which tap you can fit.

  • Noah tops come with one or three tap holes, and some Noah sizes offer a Monaco top with no tap hole for a wall mixer.
  • Acacia and the 1200 to 1800mm Polar models offer stone tops that are usually ready in 3 to 5 days.
  • Aulic Varcelli offers a choice of three stone tops.
  • On the Ensuite 400mm models the top is reversible, so the tap hole can sit on the left or the right.

Collecting, Delivering and Installing a Freestanding Vanity

Every freestanding vanity on this page can be collected free from our Sydney warehouses, and pickup needs no booking. In Melbourne, all Poseidon ranges, about three in eight models here, can be collected from Dandenong South, VIC. In Brisbane, the Harrington matte white models from 600 to 1500mm can be collected from Rocklea, QLD.

To see a vanity before you order, call 0480 746 325 to book a viewing at a Sydney warehouse. Free metro delivery applies to orders over $2,000 in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, over $2,500 in Brisbane and Adelaide, and over $3,200 in Perth.

Our Sydney metro vanity installation covers the cabinet, top, tap and waste connections:

  • Up to 900mm wide: $329
  • 1200 to 1500mm, single bowl: $449
  • 1200 to 1500mm, double bowl: $569
  • Removing and disposing of your old vanity: $100 extra

We do not install 1800mm vanities. Prices can move slightly, and the checkout shows the final amount. To finish the wall above, pick a shaving cabinet in the same width.

The RJ Bathroom team in Sydney wrote this guide from the product listings in this collection. If a listing and this guide ever differ, the listing is correct, and you can call us to check before you order.

Freestanding Vanities FAQs

Do you need to fix a freestanding vanity to the wall?

A freestanding vanity stands on its own legs or kickboard, so the floor carries the cabinet, the top and a basin full of water. We still recommend fixing it to the wall to stop it tipping, especially a model on legs. Because the wall does not take the load, you do not need noggins the way you do for a wall hung vanity. In Sydney metro, our vanity installation covers the cabinet, top, tap and waste connections, and the checkout shows the final price.

What is a freestanding vanity also called?

You will see the same cabinet listed as a floor standing vanity, a floor mounted vanity, a freestanding vanity unit or a vanity on legs. All of them stand on the floor instead of hanging on the wall. The names do not tell you the base, though, and that is the detail to check. Some models stand on legs, some on a kickboard, and some let you choose. Every vanity on this page is freestanding, from 400mm ensuite and slimline vanities to 1800mm double bowls.

Are legs or a kickboard better on a freestanding vanity?

Legs suit a bathroom where you want an open, furniture look and an easy floor to mop, and where the waste comes out of the wall. A kickboard suits a waste that comes up through the floor, because it hides the pipe and keeps dust out from under the cabinet. Scandinavia, Brighton, Rita and most Hera models ship on legs with a kickboard as an add-on. Noah sells the two bases as separate products that cannot be swapped later, so compare the Noah 1200mm on legs with its kickboard version before you order.

Does a freestanding vanity come with a basin and top?

Some do and many do not. Many freestanding vanities on this page are sold cabinet only, and you add a ceramic, poly or stone top in the product options. Others, such as the Stella range and the Hera 400mm, come with an integrated ceramic basin. Before you pay, check the number of tap holes on the top so it matches your tap. Noah tops offer one or three tap holes, and some Noah sizes offer a top with no tap hole. Many listings do not include the mixer or pop-up waste.

Are freestanding vanities good for small bathrooms?

They can be, as long as you pick the right depth. Standard freestanding vanities here are about 445 to 495mm deep, which can crowd a small room. Slimline models cut that to about 340 to 365mm, and narrow models such as the Hera 400mm and Ensuite 400mm are only 220mm deep. A model on legs also leaves more floor on show, which keeps a small room easy to clean. Measure from the wall to the door swing or shower screen first, then compare our 450mm vanities and slimline models.
